KeyServer and KeyClient/KeyAccess

For larger sites we have concurrent usage or network licenses. Concurrent usage licenses give you a pool of licenses that can be shared across an entire network. The number of seats defines how many users can use the license concurrently.

There are two options for Concurrent Usage licenses. For larger sites a license server is installed on a single server (TeamDynamix’s KeyServer) and each user’s Mac has a KeyClient application installed.

Each time a copy of MacVector is started, a license is checked out from the server. If all of the licenses in the pool are already checked out then additional users will get a message that there are no licenses available and will be asked if they wish to join a waiting list.

Serverless licenses

For our Serverless network licenses no extra software is needed to be installed on the client and no server is needed. So if you do not need the extra monitoring that KeyServer will provide then consider migrating your network license to a Serverless license. Contact Support to ask any questions you may have. Migrating a license is exceptionally easy.

How to install KeyServer and KeyClient

MacVector uses TeamDynamix’s KeyServer software (previously called Sassafras K2) for the license server and client. You will need to download the license server and also download and install the client on each Macintosh that will access the license server. The latest downloads are available on the TeamDynamix website.

KeyServer

The basic instructions are:

  • Choose a Linux, Mac OS or Windows machine that is always available on the same network that your client Macs will access.
  • Choose the appropriate installer and install KeyServer.
  • Place the license file in the KeyServer Data Folder.
  • Start (or restart) the KeyServer.

KeyClient (also called KeyAccess)

  • Install KeyClient on your Mac
  • Reboot (the install process will do this for you).
  • Click the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
  • Choose KeyAccess
  • Enter the network address (or IP address) of your KeyServer.
  • click Logon and check that KeyAccess connects.

Now as long as MacVector is activated with a network license activation code then when you start MacVector it will query the license server to see if a license is available.
