MACVECTOR PERSONAL LICENSE

We understand that while MacVector is great value for money, in these days of decreasing budgets and belt-tightening, not everyone can justify allocating the funds to purchase a full MacVector license. For a few years now we have offered yearly discounted Personal licenses for Students and Post-Docs, and we are now pleased to announce the availability of perpetual "Personal licenses" for any user.

These licenses sell for less than half the cost of a Standard MacVector license and provide exactly the same functionality, but are locked into a single machine. This dramatically lowers the entry barrier for individuals, small labs and users who might be in a predominantly PC environment, but wish to run MacVector on a single dedicated Macintosh.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

When you purchase a Personal License, you will be asked to provide the System Serial Number of the machine you intend to install it on. This is easily found by selecting "About this Mac" from the Apple menu, then clicking on the "More Info" button. You will then be sent a custom license that is locked in to that machine. You can take the machine wherever you like - home or to a conference for example - or be disconnected from a network, and MacVector will still run normally. In addition, it can be used by any user of that machine - it is not locked into a single account.

IS THIS JUST ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTION?

No - while you do immediately get sent a link to a downloadable installer and an electronic license code, you also get sent a CD and a hard-copy of the User Guide. You also get sent CDs of each major release during the time your maintenance is active and new copies of the User Guide whenever it is revised.

WHAT IF I PURCHASE A NEW MACHINE, OR MY MACHINE DIES?

You can transfer your license to another machine at any time, though we limit transfers to one machine per year to prevent abuse. In addition, you must maintain an active maintenance contract after the first year to be eligible for support and to be able to transfer the license.

MAINTENANCE? WHAT"S THAT AND HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

Each new Personal license comes with a 12 month maintenance contract. This means you have access to telepone and e-mail support in addition to all new releases of MacVector in that 12 month period. We typically release two major new versions of MacVector each year, along with a slew of bug fixes and minor enhancements at intervals in between. You'll also receive hard copies of the User Guide when we update that, typically every 18 months or so. At the end of the 12 month period you can renew the maintenance contract at a cost of just 15% of the list price. This will not change in the foreseeable future.

WHAT IF I DECIDE LATER THAT I REALLY NEED A STANDARD LICENSE?

Standard licenses are great because you can install on as many machines as you like, although only one can be running MacVector at any one time. If your lab expands and you want to upgrade to a Standard license, you will receive full credit for your Personal license (as long as you keep your maintenance up to date) so this is a no risk low cost entry into MacVector ownership.
